Cruising the Norwegian Coast

July 2014

In July 2014, Kathy and I flew to Copenhagen to board a ship for a cruise up the coast of Norway all the way to the North Cape. At the end of the cruise we flew to Oslo to visit our friends Jan and Brit Herstad.

Route

The town of Alta seen in the picture below is typical of the coastal villages of the far north. Note the snow in the hills in mid-July. But then, the town is well above the Arctic Circle.

The next day we took a bus into Copenhagen and did a lot of walking and sightseeing. Here are some pictures from that day.

After a day at sea, we arrived in the Geiranger Fjord. This would be our first (and only) gray, rainy day. But we took the tour up the mountain anyway. Here are some pictures from that day.

After Geiranger, we had a day at sea. By evening we were above the Arctic Circle and we experienced the Midnight Sun for the first time. The picture below was taken at 10:15 PM. Notice how high in the sky the sun is. The sun didn't set for 3 days.

Next we visited the town of Alta. It is known for the "Northern Lights Cathedral".

After Alta, we arrived at the northernmost stop of our trip, the North Cape and the town of Honnonsvag. Here are some pictures from there.

Next we headed south and stopped at the town of Tromso. It is nice and clean with lots of flowers. It is known for its "Arctic Cathedral". Here are some pictures from Tromso.

After Tromso we kept heading south to Leknes in the Lofoten islands. This was the only place where there wasn't much to see or do. And there were no taxis or buses to take you to other islands. So we hiked and took pictures of flowers and houses. Here are some pictures from Leknes.

In Alesund we took the Hop-on Hop-off bus to see the city. The natural canal comes into the heart of town.

Our next stop was Bergen, one of Kathy's and my favorite cities. But on this visit Bergen was very different because the tall ships were in port. There were 3 times as many people as normal. Here are some pictures from Bergen.

After Bergen, we headed to the small city of Kristiansand. It is at the southernmost tip of Norway. It is compact enough that we could do a walking tour on our own. There is a new performing center where the symphony performs. Here are some pictures from Kristiansand.

After Kristiansand, our next port was Oslo. We knew that we would be coming back to Oslo, so we didn't do much touring here. But we did a lot of walking in Skagen, Denmark - our last port before returning to Copenhagen. Skagen is a nice holiday town on the northern tip of Denmark. There are pedestrian streets, beaches and street musicians. Here are some pictures from Skagen.

The next day (after Skagen) we disembarked in Copenhagen and flew to Oslo. The next day we drove almost 2 hours south of Oslo to the town of Helgora. There we caught the ferry to an island close to the island where Jan and Brit have their summer cottage. Hanne, their daughter, rowed over and picked us up.

We all swam in the fjord several times. It was very refreshing.

Here are some more pictures from our 2 days on the island.

After 2 days on the island, we headed back to Oslo. We toured the new Opera House with Jan and Brit. Then we toured the Kon Tiki museum which contains the actual Kon Tiki boat that Thor Heyerdahl crossed the Pacific in.

The next day Jan and Brit took us to Ekeberg Park, an outdoor sculpture garden. We enjoyed the hiking and the good view of the Oslo Fjord. The next day we flew home; it had been a wonderful trip.
