Washington State, August-September 2011

On Friday, August 26, 2011, Kathy and I flew to Seattle, spent the night and then drove to Anacortes the next day. Fron there we took the ferry to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, the most populous of the islands. That night we met the other photographers that we would be with for the week.

Sunday morning we were up early to take sunrise shots at the Friday Harbor marina. The picture below is of the inter-island ferry leaving Friday Harbor. It was taken at 5:48 AM.

Here are some other pictures from that morning.

In late afternoon, we drove to the other side of the island to Roche Harbor. We shot there until the sun went down. Here are some pictures from Roche Harbor. The flowers were in a garden in front of the hotel. The picture below is the restaurant at the yacht club.

The next morning we took the 6:00 AM ferry to Lopez Island and shot at several locations. The two photos below were taken at Spencer's Spit and Shark Reef Park. Here are some more pictures from Lopez Island.

That night the group went to South Beach for an evening shoot. But Kathy and I were too tired. I went downtown to the harbor and took sunset shots. The one below is a combination of several exposures.

The next day we took the ferry to Orcas Island. We had lunch in Eastsound Village and took photos of some of the whimsical items that we found around town (like the Fairy Dresses and Kathy's picture of parasols below). Then in the afternoon we hiked down to Cascade Falls for some shots in the woods. Here are some more pictures from Orcas Island.

The next day in the late afternoon we drove to Lime Kiln State Park for sunset shooting. Kathy took a photo of me and the lighthouse while I was taking the picture of the waves around the rocks (an 8 second exposure). Here are some more pictures from Lime Kiln.

Tug boats in the fog

On the last day of shooting, we took the 8:00 AM ferry to Shaw Island - one of the least populated of the islands. It was quite foggy yhat morning.

Once on Shaw, we drove to "Our Lady of the Rock" monastery. It is a farm where the nuns raise almost all of their own food, including Highland Cattle from Scottland. To learn more about them, go to their website at: http://ourladyoftherock.com/.

It had been a busy week with several early wake-up calls, but we are pleased with several of our photographs.
