Outer Banks Photo Workshop with RMSP

May 2011

In early May 2011 while Kathy was in Italy, I went to North Carolina for a photography workshop put on by the Rocky Mountain School of Photography. The workshop was held on the Outer Banks. Our hotel was in Kill Devil Hills, NC (which I had never heard of before), a small beach town near Kity Hawk and Cape Hatteras. A lot of the photography involved timed exposure shots of the ocean at dawn and dusk. The photo below is a 2 second exposure taken just before the sun started to show on the horizon. As you will see below, we also took a lot of photos of lighthouses, flowers and sand dunes.

Our first shoot in the afternoon of the first day was on the grounds of the Currituck Heritage Park. There was a lighthouse, flowers and Currituck Sound. The picture below is inside the lighthouse looking up through the stairs (which I climbed all the way to the top). Here are some other pictures from that shoot.

The next day we did our first pre-dawn shoot near the Avalon Pier (see the first picture above). Here are three more pictures from that morning.

That evening we shot at the Brodie Island Lighthouse.

The next morning I shot the sunrise from the balcony of my room. Then we all drove to Roanoke Island to shoot around the waterfront and the botanical gardens in the town of Manteo.

In the afternoon we went out to the sand dunes at Jockey's Ridge.

The next morning we were out before dawn shooting on the beach in front of the hotel. The sea gulls were waiting for a little more light.

In the afternoon I shot honeysuckle around the hotel.

That evening we went to Nags Head Woods, a Nature Concervancy area.

On the last day of shooting, we were again up before dawn to shoot at the Nags Head Pier.

In the evening we took these pictures of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and the beach nearby.

And then we took one last picture of the sunset.

It was a hard week with all the dawn and dusk shoots. But I learned a lot.
