Visit to the Hix's Colorado Condo

September 2010

In late September of 2010, Kathy and I went to Avon, Colorado (near Beaver Creek) to visit our friends Tom and Jeanette Hix who have a condo there. They go there in the summer to hike and bike and in the winter to ski. We went to visit, hike and photograph the fall colors, especially the golden aspens.

We flew into the Eagle County Regional Airport (known as Eagle Vail to the marketing people). Acording to Wikipedia, the History Channel rated Eagle County Regional Airport as #9 on its list of Most Extreme Airports in July 2010 due to the altitude, weather variability, an approach through mountainous terrain and challenging departure procedures. But we had no trouble. We have flown in and out of this airport many times.

Tom and Jeanette picked us up and started the sight seeing right away. We drove to Sylvan Lake State Park. The lake is fed by a picturesque stream. Both the lake and the surrounding hills covered in aspens provide great scenery as seen in the pictures here .

The next day we did some serious touring. We headed out from Avon to Minturn, then on past the remains of Camp Hale, over Tennessee Pass, through Leadville, past Twin Lakes and up to Independence Pass where we stopped to take some pictures of ourselves (the one of Jeanette was taken later in the day).

After Independence Pass, we headed down to Aspen for lunch. Then it was on past Snowmass to a side trip from Carbondale up to McClure Pass and the Marble Quarries. Next it was down to Glenwood Springs and home to Avon. Here are a few of the many pictures we took that day.

The third day we hiked in the aspens and on the ski trails above Beaver Creek Village. The broad area is shown in the two pictures below. Here are some of the pictures we took while up in the aspens.

On the fourth day (Friday, October 1st), we hiked around the town of Avon and along the Eagle River. The pictures I took are here. This section of the river was near the section where I had taken some snow pictures in March (see them here).

On the last day of our visit, before going to the airport we hiked up to the Beaver Creek golf course. Here are a few pictures.

Reviewing these photos made me remember how much we enjoyed the visit.
