2004 - Exploring the Mediterranean

Ancient Ruins; A Modern Wedding

In May of 2004, while our boat SeaSpace was being repaired in Mobile, Alabama, we went on a two week cruise in the Mediterranean. When we returned from the cruise, we went to Mobile and picked up SeaSpace. For the next year we explored the coast of Florida and the islands in the Bahamas. You can read about that adventure on the SeaSpace Cruising Logs part of this site.

The trip began in Venice and ended in Barcelona. On May 12th onboard the ship, while in international waters between Greece and Italy, we were married by the ship's captain. Pictures of the ship, the wedding and each port of call are on the journal pages (the first two journals are on the bottom of this page).

The pictures below show our route, the ship and our companions. The participants on the trip were a group of five room mates from Rice (from 40 years ago) and our spouses.

Gondolas

We left Houston on May 2nd, changed planes in Amsterdam the next morning and arrived in Venice late afternoon on May 3rd. It was gray and rainy but we did a little sightseeing anyway.

The next day we checked into the Star Princess. The rest of our group went back into Venice for more sightseeing, but we stayed on board to meet with the wedding planner.

Our Ship, The Star Princess

The ship departed Venice on the evening of May 4th. On the 5th we were at sea and had plenty of time to explore the ship.

Anyone who has been on one of these new cruise ships knows that they are a destination unto themselves. One could stay on the ship the entire cruise and have plenty of things to do the whole time. The few pictures below cannot begin to show the grandeur of the Star Princess.
