Athens - Site of the first modern Olympics

Kathy at the Acropolis

On May 8th we arrived at the port of Piraeus for our visit to Athens. We took a bus into the city, checking out the preparations for the 2004 Olympics. It seemed to us that there would be no way that the streets, rail lines and stadiums would be ready in time. Work was definitely not going on 24 x 7. However, we now know that most of the work got done.

We spent much of the morning on a walking tour of the Acropolis. It was definitely worth seeing. We explored the Parthenon (built around 440 BC), the temple honoring Athena. We also saw the amphitheater and the "Porch of the Caryatids" that features columns of maidens supporting the roof of the temple.

After the Acropolis, we headed for the stadium that was the site of the first modern Olympics in 1896. Since the 2004 Olympics were to be held in Athens, the Olympic Flame was on display in the courtyard in front of the stadium.

We spent the afternoon exploring the Ancient Agora (shopping area), buying jewerly and having lunch in a local restaurant. That evening we watched the lights of the city as we sailed away.
